My Approach to Counseling
I believe that counseling can help people to overcome blocks that prevent them from fully enjoying life. These blocks may be physical, mental, relational, or spiritual. Awareness brings healing. My role as a counselor is to work alongside my clients and to act as a guide to help them uncover what may be getting in their way. I achieve this through a combination of approaches tailored to meet a person's individual needs. At the basis of it all is the recognition that everyone is unique and deserves respect, validation, and empathy.
My orientation to treatment is a holistic and eclectic one. I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based techniques, and humanistic and psychodynamic theories. I also employ the use of techniques based on neuroplasticity to foster the creation of more helpful thoughts and behaviors. Guided imagery and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT, also known as tapping) are available to those who are interested.
What can you expect from your first visit?
I am holistically trained, which means I consider the whole person, not just the particular issue with which they have come in. First, I want to hear your story and your concerns. However, I’ll also be asking questions about your work, social, and family life; overall health, diet, and exercise; supportive relationships; pets; and hobbies. Sometimes this leads into the second session. I will also ask you about your goals for counseling. How are you hoping to feel better? We’ll then discuss a plan for treatment and the frequency of our sessions.
